As a professional GolfSmith i recommend using oderless mineral spirits. It is easy to use and the fumes (because there are none) won't kill you, plus you can use your clubs within 30-40 minutes after the grip has been applied!References : 10 years as a professional golfsmith

There are some commercial products out there, but everyone I know that still puts them on still uses gas. You just need to be careful when using it.References :

What type of solvent do you use on the tape when replacing golf club grips? The instructions don't specify.
