Golf is game that many of us love, but there are times when we wish we had never picked up a club. You can make those times less frequent by using a few of these suggestions.

1. Don’t ride, walk the course. Some suggest that walking is not only the purist way to enjoy the sport, but it can also improve your score. Walking gives you more opportunity to scan the layout of each hole and consider the best strategy for your next shot. It is also a great way to get a little exercise. And, if you’re usually a golf cart person, you can save a lot of cash on cart rental fees. With a little of the money you save, you can afford to buy yourself a golf pull cart and you won’t even have to carry your bag.

2. Don’t play the blue tees. Unless you are at least a 10 handicap or lower, don’t make the golf course even harder than it has to be. If you are shooting in the ninties or triple digits, it doesn’t make much sense to make the game any more difficult. Take the extra level of anxiety out of mind and body and play the white tees.

3. Play different games. Instead of playing the same old match with your friends, compete in categories other than score. For example most fairways hit, least amount of 3 putts, or most 1 putts.

4. If it is your honor, take it. You just birdied the hardest (or easiest) hole on the golf course, it’s your tee, take it, you earned it.Challenge yourself to get another one; you will be amazed how often you can have two birdies in a row if you are actually trying to get two birdies in a row.

5. Improve your lie. When you are playing a recreational round of golf, there is no way you should be playing the strict rules of golf. The average round would be at least 6 hours at courses all over the world, if everyone played by these rules. Golfers would be looking for every lost ball for five minutes and returning to the tees all day after hitting there first ball out bounds. So if we are bending the rules to save time, why not bend them for something you can actually benefit from. Play by winter rules all the time.

6. Don’t be so hard on yourself. An average golfer plays twice per week if they’re lucky. On top of that, you don’t practice as much as you should. You can’t honestly think that your game is exactly what it should be. Don’t be so hard on yourself when you are not playing well, just enjoy the game itself. Everyone has bad days, even the pros.

If you follow these few tips: play the white tees, walk with a golf push cart, give yourself a good lie, don’t play for the best score, play for the honor, and be realistic about your expectations, the game will be much more enjoyable.
